Endobarrier is a non-surgical device, aimed at facilitating weight loss in the clinically obese, with particular benefit in the improvement of the symptoms of type-2 diabetes.
A thin plastic sleeve is inserted via the oesophagus and stomach, and lines the first 60cm of the small intestine, preventing food absorption until further down the intestinal pathway.
The body reacts differently to food when the first part of the small intestine is blocked which can lead to dramatic weight loss and reduction of blood sugar levels, helping the patient to better control their type-2 diabetes.
The procedure can be performed in less than one hour, with the patient under general anaesthesia.
However, the sleeve cannot be implanted permanently and must be removed after a maximum period of 12 months.
