Abiliti

Abiliti

A new, pioneering, weight loss treatment is now being offered to patients at St Anthony’s Hospital.

The Abiliti device is similar in nature and size to a pacemaker, and is implanted within the abdomen. A wire containing a sensor and electrode is attached to the outer wall of the stomach. The sensor detects any eating event and after a preset period of time, the electrode emits a small electrical current directly to the Vagus nerve of the stomach, producing a sensation of fullness.

This makes the patient less inclined to continue eating, which facilitates sustained weight loss. The device also collects data which is transmitted wirelessly to a computer to show the volume of food that the patient is eating and at what time intervals, providing more accurate monitoring of food intake.

The device has the benefits of being removable, whilst the operation is short by comparison to other weight loss surgeries and is minimally invasive. Provided that the patients eats a healthy and balanced diet after the operation, problems involved with other weight loss procedures, such as difficulty in absorbing vitamins (requiring daily supplements) cease to be an issue.

However, this treatment is not necessarily suitable for all patients and it is important to always consult your specialist who will be able to advise upon the most appropriate treatment for you. The Abiliti device is currently implanted at St Anthony’s by Mr Alberic Fiennes, Consultant bariatric and general surgeon.
